Angels in adoration on either side of the tabernacle on All Saints Day

Thanks to COVID-19 something unexpectedly wonderful happened: we were forced to think about Mass attendance differently.  Then, after St. Joseph’s stopped zooming its services, I ventured out in search of a happy home online.  It took lots of time, lots of Masses at various places but, finally, I found a place to call home once again when I discovered St. John the Evangelist in Greenfield, WI (October 20, 2021).

I feel like Goldilocks.  Everything is just right, with an emphasis on diversity, fulfillment, accessibility, and a sense of belonging without having to be physically present.  My heart knows no bounds.  I can attend Mass anytime, take notes to my heart’s content, be in reflection mode at will, and share with others.

Fr. Mike Merkt, OFM, is pastor; but others— Fr. Alex and Fr. Dominic among them— celebrate daily Mass, too.  Best of all, the church’s YouTube channel, which started February 4, 2021, features hundreds of Masses that I can (re)visit day or night.

Mass (CT): Daily at 8 a.m.  Saturday vigil at 4:30 p.m.  Sunday at 8:30 & 10:30 a.m.

Church with a large backlit stained-glass window, tree on the right, & evening sky in various hues as the sun's last rays shine through

Knowing what I now know, if I were not already a Christian, I would hesitate in becoming one, at least until the religion in all its major forms offers a fearless, searching, public moral accounting for its past crimes… first, against Jews, and also against its own nonconformist members (Richard Rohr, OFM).

Let’s be honest: religion has probably never had such a bad name.  Christianity is now seen as “irrelevant” by some, “toxic” by many, and often as a large part of the problem rather than any kind of solution.  Some of us are almost embarrassed to say we are Christian because of the negative images that word conjures in others’ minds (Richard Rohr, OFM).

So how do we love God?  Most of us seem to have concluded we love God by attending church services.  For some reason, we think that makes God happy.  I’m not sure why.  Jesus never talked about attending services, although church can be a good container to start with.  I believe our inability to recognize and love God in what is right in front of us has allowed us to separate religion from our actual lives.  There is Sunday morning, and then there is real life (Richard Rohr, OFM).
