Exactly one year ago today Steven and I were at the Bishop O’Connor Center in Madison, Wisconsin for the annual LAMP reunion— its fiftieth, my (our) first.
What an amazing time shared among long-lost friends from July 1966, when, fresh out of high school, we were youthful volunteers— “naïve green beans” (my words)— assigned to Matamoros, Mexico in Bishop Jerome Hastrich’s Latin American Mission Program. We were clueless about so much! Yet LAMP fostered in us a spirit of service for all time within (and beyond) our respective communities.
Service is the rent we pay to be living. It is the very purpose of life and not something you do in your spare time (Marian Wright Edelman).

Thanks to Sheila Schyvinck, Pat Finnegan Ishizaki’s best bud, I have a priceless nugget from the past! She saw me looking for our beloved Carmelo (a priest at Iglesia Miguel Archangel in Diaz Ordaz, Mexico) and called me over to the table with the memorabilia.
“Here, take this. Carmelo won’t mind if I give it to you instead.”
My first and only LAMP photo! And thanks to Tom Scott for the prayer card he so thoughtfully gifted to each of us at the luncheon! What a treasure trove!

Mother Mary, I commend and entrust to you all that goes to make up earthly progress, asking that it should not be one-sided, but that it should create conditions for the full spiritual advancement of individuals, families, communities, and nations. I commend to you the poor, the suffering, the sick and the handicapped, the aging and the dying. I ask you to reconcile those in sin, to heal those in pain, and to uplift those who have lost their hope and joy. Show to those who struggle in doubt the light of Christ, your son. Amen.
O Virgin Mary, help of Christians, we dedicate ourselves to your service. We concentrate our minds, hearts, and bodies and promise to work always for the glory of God and the salvation of all people. We pray for the Church throughout the world.
Protect the young and help the aged, save sinners, and console the dying.
You are our hope, Mary, mother of mercy and gate of heaven. Pray to your Son for us so that we may be filled with selfless charity and deep faith. Ask Jesus for those things which we cannot obtain through our own actions and help us in this, our present necessity. (State your petition.)
May we always see the will of the Father in our lives. We ask you this, sweet spouse of the Spirit so that we may come to your Son in grace. Amen.
