Driving through Goliad on our way to Austin a couple of weekends ago, I thought back to our last visit to the Presidio La Bahia and Goliad State Park two years ago.
Both places have fascinated me since I was a kid, and only the San José Mission in San Antonio beckons as strongly.
Every time I visit I always wonder, If these places could speak, what would they say?
Presidio Nuestra Señora de Loreto de la Bahia
Our Lady of Loreto has been at its present location since 1749. The chapel, now a mission of Immaculate Conception Church and part of the Diocese of Victoria, continues to celebrate Sunday Mass at 5:00 P.M.
Moreover, the priests’ quarters, which initially housed military officers, were turned into a two-bedroom apartment that can be rented on a nightly basis, according to an online source.
Wouldn’t it be great to spend the night? What an adventure that would be!
Mission Nuestra Señora del Espiritu Santo de Zuñiga
The mission, built in 1722, was moved from the Matagorda Bay area to its present location in 1749. However, the existing structure at the Goliad State Park is a reconstruction dating back to the 1930s, since the original was almost entirely destroyed by the hurricane of 1886.
