Most Precious Blood Church
Corpus Christi, TX

Lord God, you love the innocence and goodness of children.  May their parents guide them in faith and wisdom and protect them from evil.  Bless my own little ones and keep them in your tender care.  May all children experience the near presence of St. Anthony watching over them with his protection.  Amen.

Daily offering

For love of me you came to earth; you gave your life for me.  So every day you give me now I give back happily.

Take all my laughter, all my tears, each thought, each word, each deed; and let them be my all-day prayer to help all those in need.

God, our Creator, you blessed St. Anthony with a loving family to help his Christian formation.  Bless our family and help us grow together in faith by prayer and open concern for each other.

Strengthen the bonds of love among us through our faithful celebration of the Eucharist, which makes us one in Christ.  We thank you, Lord, for our daily bread so that we may share, with all whom we meet, the love and mystery of Christ in human life.

Protect our children and young people in their years of growth and development.  Help them to be pure in heart and faithful to good relationships.  Stand by those members of our family in advanced years.  Grant them the comfort of their faith, their family, and their friends.  We surrender to you our departed loved ones knowing that we will be united in your eternal kingdom.  Amen.

For a mother with child

Almighty and everlasting God, through the Holy Spirit you prepared the body and soul of the glorious Virgin Mary to be a worthy dwelling place of your divine son.  Through the name of the Holy Spirit you sanctified St. John the Baptist while still in his mother’s womb.  Hear the prayers of your humble servant who implores you, through the intercession of St. Gerard, to protect me from the dangers of childbearing and to watch over the child with which you blessed me.  May this child be cleansed by the saving water of baptism and, after a Christian life on earth, may we, both mother and child, attain everlasting bliss in heaven.  Amen.

For catechists

Jesus, teacher and lord, help me prepare the soil for the planting of the seeds of the gospel of faith, love, and truth.  Help me see the children and families I serve as seeds waiting to be tended with your love, watered with your Good News, and given the room to grow as your disciples on earth.  Inspire me to welcome this new catechetical year with a heart full of hope, encouraged by your Holy Spirit to proclaim the Word with joy and to trust in the great harvest you will help to grow.  Amen (“August prayer;” RCL Benziger, 2019).

Loving God, Creator of all things, you call us to be in relationship with you and others.  Thank you for calling me to be a catechist, for the opportunity to share with others what you have given to me.  May all those with whom I share the gift of faith discover how you are present in all things.  May they come to know you, the one true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.  May the grace of the Holy Spirit guide my heart and lips, so that I may remain constant in loving and praising you.  May I be a witness to the Gospel and a minister of your truth.  May all my words and actions reflect your love.  Amen.

For my child

Lord, may I be so bold as to beg the gift of faith for my child?  I feel like the mother of James and John asking for a special place next to you.  But it isn’t honor or position, recognition or power that I beg.  No, Lord.  I beg something even more outrageous.  I beg that you give my child you.  Give the gift of faith, the gift of knowing you, not just about you.  Give friends, family, and community that enable growth and an intimate relationship with you.  And, further, grant the grace that my child receive you openly, generously, permanently, and with the joy of understanding that faith is a gift.  Lord, forgive me for my bold prayer.  I beg you, please, give my child the gift of faith (Montserrat Jesuit Retreat House Prayer Book, n. d.).

For parents

Lord, thank you for the wonders and mysteries you give.  I know you reveal your own self in the myself of people; and, in many ways, my parents are a mystery to me.  As children, we come to know only a part of you.  Sometimes we can’t understand what is revealed or what we come to yearn for….  These, too, are gifts from you.

You’ve given me the example of really loving your parents.  You did what you said and said what you did, always loving first.  So, Lord, enable me to understand my parents more deeply and to love them better.  I beg you to protect and bless my parents… because they’re part of you and you’re part of them (Montserrat Jesuit Retreat House Prayer Book, n. d.).

For students

Loving God, each day as I step further into my future, give me the courage, knowledge, and patience that I need.  Help me to love you with all my heart, soul, and strength.  Remind me that you are always with me and that you will never lead me into anything that you won’t lead me through.  Thank you for the gift of my life, the many talents you have given me, and the opportunity of education.  May the way I live be my gift back to you.  Amen.

O humble St. Joseph of Cupertino, singularly favored by God in the difficulties of study and the worries of examinations, implore the Holy Spirit to enlighten my mind and my memory in the search of God’s truth and wisdom.  Help me, especially, in the decisive moments of examination, protecting me from that forgetfulness and disturbing anxiety which often accompany them so that I may grow in knowledge, love, and service of God from whom flows that wisdom which leads to eternal life.  Amen.

From the Miraculous Responsory

St. Anthony, with my guardian angel, guide me through the perils of this life and keep me safe.

Pray an Our Father, a Hail Mary, and a Glory be.

Guardian angel prayer

Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here, ever this day be at my side… to light, to love, to be my guide.

Irish blessing

May God grant you always… a sunbeam to warm you; a moonbeam to charm you; a sheltering angel, so nothing will harm you; laughter to cheer you; faithful friends near you; and, whenever you pray, Heaven to hear you.

O good St. Gerard, powerful intercessor before the throne of God, wonder-worker of our day, I call upon you and seek your help.  While on earth you always fulfilled God’s designs.  Help me always to do God’s will.  Beseech the master of life from whom all parenthood proceeds to bless me with offspring that I may raise up children to God in this life and heirs to the kingdom of God’s glory in the life to come.  Amen.

Of a parent

Lord, thank you for the gift of parenthood.  It is a magnificent privilege that you share your parenting with me.  I admit I sometimes do not feel up to the task.  Your gifts require ongoing opening, discovery, and growth.  Grant me the grace to keep unpacking my parenthood.  Give me the clarity to distinguish the wrapping from the gift.  Bestow the strength and perseverance to face the challenges of daily loving now that the loving children require no matter their age.  Help me live as a model of forgiveness, openness, joy, and faith that keeps loving you and others.  Lord, thank you for this most precious gift; but, Lord, you must remain in it for I know it is a gift for a lifetime (Montserrat Jesuit Retreat House Prayer Book, n. d.).

Parent’s prayer

Most loving Father, the example of parenthood, you have entrusted our children to us to bring them up for you and prepare them for everlasting life.  Assist us with your grace that we may fulfill this sacred duty with competence and love. Teach us what to give and what to withhold.  Show us when to reprove, when to praise, and when to be silent.  Make us gentle and considerate, yet firm and watchful.  Keep us from the weakness of indulgence and the excess of severity.  Give us the courage to be disliked sometimes by our children when we must do necessary things which are displeasing in their eyes.  Give us the imagination to enter their world in order to understand and guide them.  Grant us all the virtues we need to lead them by word and example in the ways of wisdom and piety.  One day with them, may we enter into the joys of our true and lasting home with you in heaven.  Amen.

St. Basil the Great (c. 329-379)

Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd, leading him to life.

St. Bonaventure (1217-1274)

The angels, wherever they may be sent, never stop gazing upon God.  In the same way, the virtuous person, as much as he can, always keeps the memory of God in his heart.

St. Francis de Sales (1567-1622)

Make yourself familiar with the angels and behold them frequently in spirit; for without being seen, they are present with you.

St. Pio (1887-1968)

Angel of God, my guardian, to whom the goodness of the Heavenly Father entrusts me, enlighten, protect, and guide me now and forever.  Amen.

St. Raphael (archangel)

Dear Saint Raphael, your lovely name means “Medicine of God.”  The Lord sent you to young Tobias to guide him throughout a long journey.  Upon his return you taught him how to cure his father’s blindness.  How natural, therefore, for Christians to pray for your powerful help for safe travel and a happy return.  This is what we ask for ourselves as well as for all who are far from home.

Lord God of heavenly hosts, with wondrous wisdom you assign angels and men their varying roles.  Grant that Saint Raphael, who is always serving you in heaven, may protect us during our earthly life.  At the end of our life, may he take us up and bring us to paradise.  This we ask of you through Christ, our Lord.  Amen.

St. Thérèse (1873-1897)

God, our Father and Creator through the intercession of St. Thérèse, we ask for insight and wisdom to see the signs of your love in the people and in the events of our lives.  May we discern what we have to do as students and give us the strength to do it.   Grant us success in our work and examinations.  Help us to believe in your great love for each one of us so that we may live in truth and radiate your love in our lives.  Through Christ, our Lord.  Amen.

Student’s prayer

O glorious St. Anthony, divinely endowed with the learning of the saints, I desire to place my studies under your protection.  Guided by your example, I wish to draw all my knowledge from the sacred hearts of Jesus and Mary.  With your assistance I will study in a spirit of penance and pure intention.  May the Father of Light grant me, through your intercession, a clear intellect, sound judgment, and retentive memory.  Help me study perseveringly [so] that I may develop the gifts with which God has [blessed] me and use them according to his divine will.  Dear St. Anthony, aid me to succeed in my studies and examinations, if it be for the greater glory of God and the benefit of my soul.  Amen.

All-knowing God, you blessed St. Anthony with human and Christian wisdom.

You know how important my studies are for my life and the commitment they require of me.  I pray for a firm will to apply myself to this commitment.

May school be for me an arena of life where I may apply to human knowledge the teachings of my faith.  May I continue my studies successfully and be useful to others with Christian responsibility.  Amen.

Teenagers & young adults

St. Anthony, friend of all, I share with you my aspirations and desires.  Help me to be constant in my Christian commitment.  Make me pure in heart.  Give me the strength and courage to realize my worthy ideals. May my studies and work prepare me for life so that I may help anyone who may be in need.  Help me recognize true friends; keep me from all bodily and spiritual harm.  Make me firm in my convictions.  Amen.

To my patron saint

My holy patron saint, your name was given to me in baptism, that I should often think of you and endeavor to please God as you did in your life on earth.  It is my sincere desire to imitate your virtues and… one day join you in heaven singing God’s praises forever and ever.  Often I have been called by your name, but seldom have I shown your constant zeal in striving for holiness of life.  Henceforth, I promise with God’s grace to reject all that is evil and to promote all that is good.  I petition you, my holy patron saint of God, to intercede for me that I, like you, may one day enjoy the bliss of being numbered among God’s saints for all eternity.  Amen.

To Our Lady of Perpetual Help

Virgin Mother, my mother, come to the aid of my children!

May your blessing accompany them, guard them, and defend them.  May it encourage them, sustain them in every difficulty, and in every place.

When they go off to work or to play, when they move from place to place, at every step they take, Virgin Mother, my mother, watch over them.

When they face challenges and suffering, when the evil one tries to seduce them with the attractions of pleasure, of violence, of temptation, of bad example, Virgin Mother, my mother, watch over them.

Virgin Mother, watch over them and preserve them from every evil.

When they approach the sacred banquet to be fed with the bread of angels, with the word that was made flesh in your womb, Virgin Mother, my mother, bless my children.

When at night they prepare to rest so as to rise again with new energy, watch over their slumber and make each new day a step toward their eternal homeland.

Virgin Mother, my mother, bless my children, descend over them in the day and in the night, in moments of joy and moments of sadness, in health and in sickness, in life and in death.

Bring them to live with you forever in eternity.  Amen.
